Waxwing build guide:

Firmware is available on the Downloads page. 

1 - Flash your KB2040, download the Waxwing KB2040 Vial firmware, plug the KB2040 into your computer, quickly double-tap the reset button. You should get "drive" popup, simply put the UF2 firmware file into the drive. Congratulations, your KB2040 is flashed.

2 - Verify that your KB2040 has flashed correctly by checking Vial. 

ALL COMPONENTS BESIDES RGB STRIP GO ON THE TOP OF THE BOARD

3 - Begin bending and soldering all diodes on the board into the spots marked D1-43.  Black stripe of diode goes towards the white stripe marked on the PCB. All black stripes go towards the top of the board. It is imperative that you do not get any backwards. 

4 - Now, we are going to solder in your KB2040.  ORIENTATION OF THIS MATTERS VERY MUCH.  The USBC port obviously goes to the edge of the board, the components of the dev board face TOWARDS YOU, away from the PCB, flat part of the KB2040 goes against the PCB.  It is placed on the TOP of the keyboard (the side with the Waxwing print) using the pins.  The longer side of the pins go through the PCB, the shorter ones go through the dev board.  Solder one pin on each corner of the KB2040 first, then continue soldering away until all the pins on the top side are finished.  Then flip the board over and solder all the pins to the PCB.  Again, make sure to clip the excess length here. 

NOTE, use the pin headers if you are uncomfortable doing SMD soldering, use the pads on the board if your KB2040 has castellated pins, and you are comfortable soldering them.  Its easy to bridge things that shouldn't be bridged if you solder using the pads instead of pins. 

5 - At this point, I STRONGLY advise you test your board by shorting the switch holes together with a suitable tool. It would be a real bummer if you soldered all your switches on, just to find out you soldered a diode on backwards.

6 - Now begin inserting your switches into the PCB.  The waxwing does not use any stabilizers. This part is pretty self explanatory. Insert all the switches and solder both pins from each switch onto the PCB.  Make sure you have no bent pins, and be careful not to scratch the PCB. 

NOTE, if you want to install RGB backlighting, now is the time. Use a WS2128 strip, cut the strip down to 4 LED's, place the edge of the copper pads halfway overtop of the through holes. The through holes are located directly underneath the Pro micro.  Make sure your strip matches up with the holes, left hole is 5V, middle is DIN, and right is GND.  Arrows on your strip should point away from the holes.  Go ahead and apply solder to the pad and holes to bridge the two. Make sure not to bridge any holes or pads on the strip to each other, they are fairly close together. If you are not understanding what pads go to what pins, follow the traces to the KB2040

7 - The board is fully functional at this point, so we will move onto the bottom plate.  This is simple, install the standoffs to the bottom of the PCB using the SHORT screws.  Once all standoffs are installed, gently place the acrylic bottom onto the standoffs, it only goes on one way, if the holes don't line up, you have it on backwards. insert all the LONG screws through the acrylic and thread them into the standoffs.

8- Install your keycaps, its ready to go!
